There are two types of species under the genus, Pan. The well known chimpanzee, known as the Pan troglodytes, the common chimpanzee, primarily lives in Central and West Africa. Their cousin, the Bonobo, also known as the Pan paniscus are mainly found in the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Congo River is what separates the two different species.
